In May, 1889, Van Gogh left Arles and traveled to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence where he admitted himself to the private Saint-Paul Asylum. While he recuperated from his mental illness, he began painting the olive trees in the region, ancient trees whose rebirth in spring and sustaining fruit offered consolation to Van Gogh’s wounded psyche and soul. Discover the beauty and spiritual significance of Van Gogh’s fifteen paintings of the olive groves. Presented by Jerry Matovcik.
